How Your Small Business Can Benefit from a Copywriter

Over the past few months, I have had the pleasure of meeting absolutely loads of business owners.

When I tell them I'm a copywriter, the reaction I usually get is "Oh. What does that involve?", and whilst this is obviously my favourite question (any excuse to talk about myself), it also makes me realise that many of these businesses are missing out on a huge opportunity to improve their marketing, and in turn, business strategies.

How can a copywriter help my business?

One of the first challenges that appears when starting your own business is working out exactly how to communicate it to your audience.

Whilst this seems like an easy task on the face of it, it often causes a lot more stress than people expect, and this is for a few different reasons.

Firstly, you often find that the closer you are to something, the more difficult it is to understand what it is that will entice your audience - you know what you want to say, but you find this isn't always what they want to hear.

Secondly, the way you speak about your product or service out loud isn't usually the way you would write about it.

When talking out loud, you're assisted with things such as your facial expressions, hand gestures and general back and forth conversation, but with your copy, what you see is what you get.

I previously studied journalism, and learnt that anything important in a news article needs to be included within the first few lines - you should never make the reader work for their information. This is also how you should be speaking about your products.

This is relevant when thinking about websites in particular; you've got about 10 seconds to make your first impression and encourage the visitor to stay on your site.

If you're not communicating what you do and why you're the best at it in the right way, they're gone.

I had a really interesting conversation with a lady in one of my networking groups, Sharon Wyness, this week. She's been in business for over 20 years, but it's only in the past year that she's realised the benefit of hiring a copywriter.

"When I first toyed with the idea of using a copywriter, I had my concerns. What if she didn't sound like me? What if she didn't get the message across in the right way?

But I took the plunge, and I'm so happy I did. The fact is a good copywriter will always get your message across in the right way - and they can do it better than you can!

She's saved me endless amounts of time and stress worrying about what to write and when to write it, and I can now spend that time doing my actual work. It's been a real game-changer."

Whilst the benefits of what I do are obvious to me, I realise they're not to everyone, so I thought I'd close with a nice list of reasons why you should hire a copywriter (specifically, this one 😉)

We save you time

Time is not something which business owners have a lot of, so any opportunity to free yourself from hours sitting in front of a laptop trying to work out what to say can't be a bad thing, can it?

We make you money

The whole point of using a copywriter is to speak to your audience in a way that encourages them to take an action - usually, to purchase from you. The more people you can get to engage with your message, the more customers you get!

We're cheaper than hiring an agency

The best thing about using a freelance copywriter is that you can pick us up and drop us whenever you like. Sounds harsh, but that's the truth! Whether you need help writing a few bits for your website, or want someone to take over the writing of your monthly blog, there's no minimum or maximum that you can ask us to do. So we cost a lot less!
