Why Should I Hire a Copywriter?

You’re the expert in your business. You know it inside out, upside down and back to front. So why would you hire someone else to talk about it on your behalf?

Writing brilliant copy isn’t quite as easy as it sounds. It’s not just about knowing what you’re talking about, but also knowing exactly how to deliver that message – often to different audiences.

A great copywriter is someone who can encompass everything about your business, brand and products or services in what they write. They build your tone of voice and company messaging, helping people understand what you do and eventually encourage them to purchase what you’re offering.

Say for example you’re investing in a new website. You can find the best web developer in the world to build it for you, completely on brand with all the pages you need – but if the copy isn’t right, the website won’t provide the results that you’re after.

Do I need a copywriter?

If you’re currently wondering whether a copywriter is what you’re after and perhaps need your arm twisted slightly, here are some reasons why they can be a great investment for your business.

1.   IF WRITING ISN’T A KEY SKILL OF YOURS

As I stated above, writing copy isn’t always easy. As much as I’m sure you can write cohesive content and make perfect sense, great copy is about a lot more than this. Think of it in the same way you think of a hairdresser – yes, you can probably cut your own hair and end up with a shorter style, but it’s unlikely it will look how you wanted it to!

If you’re not completely confident in your writing skills, it’s always best to outsource and hire an expert. The results you will see will undoubtably be much better, and you will be able to reach much wider audiences.

2.  IF YOU’RE LAUNCHING SOMETHING NEW

Whether it’s a new website, a new product or service or even a complete rebrand, when you’ve spent a lot of time building something, understandably you want your audience to feel as positive about it as you do!

Remember that there are always two elements to communications – how they look and how they sound. Now, the visual aspect is usually the first thing that catches the eye, and is something that you or your designer will have in the bag. But once you’ve caught someone’s attention, you need to keep it!

Inviting a good copywriter into the process will give them the opportunity to get under the skin of what you’re offering and use their skills to bring your creation to life.

3.  IF YOU NEED TO WRITE SOMETHING FOR A SPECIFIC AUDIENCE

If you’re trying to communicate your business or products to a new audience, it can be difficult to get your messaging right. Not everyone responds to the same copy and your tone of voice and the way you approach speaking to your audience can dramatically affect the success of your communications.

One of the best things about copywriters is their ability to be almost chameleon-like in their skills. You want to speak like a professional expert? You got it. You want to come across friendly and colloquial? Sure. You want to offend people? Possibly not advisable, but here it is. Outsourcing copy to an expert will help to grow your business and open it up to a world of new opportunities.

4. IF YOU’RE TRYING TO MAKE SOMETHING SOUND MORE INTERESTING

Let’s face it, some industries just aren’t as interesting as others. I’ve worked in banking, insurance, tax – the list goes on. And one thing’s for certain; the way you talk about your products is so much more important than it can be for others.

Making any product appeal to a wide range of audiences is one of the many skills of a copywriter. They are adept at finding your story and presenting it in a way which is not only interesting, but something that people want to know more about.

5.  IF YOU NEED SOME SUBTLY PERSUASIVE COPY

The art of persuasion is something that every good copywriter should have a pretty good grasp of. In the modern world, people generally don’t like being ‘sold’ to. We’ve all taken our numbers off the public directory; we hang up on sales calls. We just don’t like it! So, the need for selling subtly have never been more vital.

It’s all about knowing how to use conscious and subconscious messaging to influence people in a way which doesn’t make them feel as though they’re being pushed into anything. Your copywriter will be able to use their experience of different audiences and industries to position that messaging for you in a way which will gain the best results possible.

6. IF YOU HAVE NO TIME

Let’s face it. Sometimes you just really don’t have time to sit and write copy, and certainly not to the degree in which you need it to perform. Remember that the words you use on your website, your social platforms and in your communications are all just as important as one another. So, what would you do in any other situation where you don’t have time to perform a task well? Delegate!
