Hi, I’m Sarah: Copywriter, storyteller, and accidental business owner

Want to find out more about me, what I do and why? It’s all here.

I thought I’d take a minute to introduce myself properly – not just as a freelance copywriter, but as the person behind the words. So often, we see a shiny website or a well-crafted social media post and forget that there’s a real person with a story, experience, and a lot of learning behind it all.

The journey to where I am today wasn’t exactly a straight line. It took twists, turns, and a whole lot of figuring out what works, what doesn’t, and most importantly, what makes me truly happy.

So, whether you’re curious about my background, thinking about starting your own freelance journey, or just want to know a little more about what makes me tick, keep reading. I’ll take you through the ups, the downs, and everything that led me to where I am today – and why I’m so passionate about helping businesses get their messaging right.

Where it all started

I was born in Wimbledon in 1987, living there until I was six, when we moved to Esher. Growing up, it was clear I had a particular flair for all things creative and linguistic. Maths? Nope. Logic? Double nope. These early years should’ve been a clue that my future would involve lots of words and no calculators. And this also explains why it took me forever to get my prices right.

Let’s rewind to 2008—a year that’s gone down in history as the absolute worst time to graduate from university. The job market was in the bin, but I lucked out when a friend heading off on her gap year handed her job over to me. Suddenly, I was a customer service agent at a startup e-money company.

It was a baptism of fire into the world of finance, but I soaked up every detail and quickly realised that marketing was calling my name. I shadowed the marketing team as much as I could, started learning the ropes, and eventually decided it was time to move on to pastures, and opportunities, new.

The great (but not always fun) career shuffle

What followed was a mix of roles in huge international companies and scrappy little agencies. I learned loads and honed my skills, but something always felt off. No matter how great the job looked on paper, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I didn’t quite fit. I’d often find myself frustrated or restless, searching for something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

Then came 2020, when life decided to give me a good old shove in the right direction.

From redundancy to ‘What if I just worked for myself?’

It was a chilly Monday morning in February 2020 when my boss called me into a meeting and hit me with the news: redundancy was on the table. It was a gut punch. I cried (obviously) and took myself off to Wales to sulk and figure out my next move.

After a weekend of windswept walks and way too many drinks, I came back with a niggling idea: could I actually do this on my own?

Then COVID hit. Interviews were cancelled, the job market froze, and that little idea stopped being a "what if" and turned into my only real option. So, I went for it.

At first, I offered every marketing service under the sun: social media management, strategy, branding—you name it. But it quickly became clear that what I really loved was copywriting. I didn’t even realise it could be a full-time job at first, but once I figured that out, everything clicked.

Slow start, big dreams

I landed my first paying client in May 2020. It wasn’t glamorous, and I had no clue what I was doing half the time, but I kept showing up. Networking became my new best friend, and slowly but surely, I started to build my name in the freelance world.

Lockdown made motivation hard (relatable, right?), but I knew this was what I wanted. Then in October 2020, I found out I was pregnant. Suddenly, I had a massive reason to get my act together. With a baby on the way, I threw myself into building my profile, signing clients, and preparing for the wildest juggling act of my life.

Baby on board and work on the go

My son was born in July 2021, but I didn’t get the typical maternity leave that most people expect. Instead, I took about three weeks off and then got back to work—laptop on one side, baby on the other.

It wasn’t easy in the slightest, but I made it work. By July 2022, he was off to nursery, and I finally had some breathing room. With time on my side, I started getting serious about my business. Clients were rolling in, referrals were stacking up, and everything was great…except my prices.

The turning point: Pricing and confidence

I was working crazy hours but not earning what I should have been. Early in 2024, I decided enough was enough. I signed up for an amazing course called Content to Clients, and it genuinely changed everything. I learned how to price myself properly, target the right clients, and set my business up for long-term success.

Now I’ve got a steady stream of retainer clients, I love the projects I work on, and I’m aiming to hit six figures in the next financial year.

Why I do what I do

Freelancing isn’t just about being my own boss (although that’s a massive bonus). It’s about loving what I do and having the freedom to spend time with my family while running a business I’m proud of. I get to help clients tell their stories, craft messaging that connects, and show the world the power of brilliant copy.

If you’re looking for a copywriter who’s been there, done that, and knows what it takes to make words work harder, drop me a message. Let’s make some magic happen.
